Getting Married in Australia

If you are getting Married in Australia you:-

  • Must be over the age of 18 years old or have a court order.
  • Cannot be still Married to another person.
  • You are unable to Marry your closest family members ie: parents, brothers & sisters or grandparents.
  • Must be able to present all Original documents required (in English – NAATI translated, if in a foreign language) to your Authorised Marriage Celebrant.
  • Complete and sign a “Notice of Intent to Marriage” declaration. This has to be given to your Registered Marriage Celebrant at least 1 month before your Wedding date and no more than 18 months prior to that date.
  • Sign a declaration a few days before your Wedding Day, to say:- each of you have “No Impediments to the Marriage” (You can still legally marry each other.)
  • You need 2x witnesses over the age of 18years to hear your legal Vows and witnesses your signatures on all 3 of the Marriage Certificates.
  • Your Marriage Celebrant will have to say a legal Monitum, to say they are Authorised under Australian Law to Marry yourselves.
  • Yourselves to include in your Ceremony each of your FULL names.
  • For each of you to say your legal Vows out loud to each other. Note: Your two witnesses must be able to hear your legal vows. (You may of course include other more personal vows and promises to each other in your Ceremony)

What Happens Next?

  • Decide on a date and time.
  • Decide on a Special Place you have in mind for getting Married. If outside you may need a plan B, in case of bad weather.
  • Inquire with local authorities or venues if there are any fees or restrictions for use for getting married at this location.
  • Decide on the Type of Ceremony you want whether it will be traditional, religious, cultural, spiritual, themed, personal, intimate, formal, informal, serious, fun or exhilarating.
  • Phone or e-mail myself for a chat or get to know each other meeting.

If you are happy to proceed we will fill out and sign your NOIM – Notice of Intended Marriage Declaration, which must be lodged with your Marriage Celebrant at least one calendar month before your Wedding date and not more than 18 months prior to your ceremony date.

You will need to provide your Original Birth Certificates or Passports along with photo identification and any other relevant documentation.                This will be discussed on my first contact with you.

A booking fee will also be taken at this stage, to hold your date and for the lodgment of the NOIM with myself.

The rest of the account is payable 21 days before your wedding ceremony date.
